In collaboration with FamilySearch International, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), and the California African American Museum, we partnered to produce and direct an award-winning series of inspiring documentary vignettes. These segments feature heartfelt interviews with community leaders and notable figures who share stories that highlight the tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers and the records they’ve made available through the Freedmen’s Bureau Search Portal. This groundbreaking resource, containing over 1.8 million names of men, women, and children, provides an unprecedented connection to the past—an online tool that individuals and families can easily use to reconnect with their heritage, honor the profound legacy of Black history, and foster deep, meaningful ties to those who came before them.
